UnsilencedMen (NPO) was honoured to collaborate with the Law Students’ Council (LSC) at Wits University for the Men-tality Conference, a powerful and much-needed platform dedicated to addressing men’s mental health within academic spaces.
Hosted on 12 March 2026, the conference brought together thought leaders, professionals, and students in a shared commitment to breaking the silence around the emotional and psychological challenges faced by men — particularly in high-pressure environments such as law school.
A Platform for Honest Dialogue and Awareness
The Men-tality Conference created a safe and engaging environment where difficult but necessary conversations could take place. From academic pressure to identity, emotional wellbeing, and societal expectations, the discussions reflected the lived realities of many young men navigating both personal and professional demands.
The event was not only about raising awareness but also about equipping attendees with practical tools and perspectives to better manage their mental health.
Insightful Contributions from Esteemed Speakers
The conference featured a diverse panel of speakers who brought valuable insight from their respective fields:
Dr Themba Tom Ntuli – Public Health Specialist and Public Speaker Provided a broader perspective on mental health within public health systems and the importance of early intervention and awareness.
Dr Steven Molakeng – Mental Health Specialist (UnsilencedMen) Representing UnsilencedMen, Dr Molakeng unpacked the emotional and behavioral patterns men often struggle with, offering practical tools for emotional regulation, resilience, and seeking support.
Mr Leon De Beer – Deputy Director, South African Federation for Mental Health (SAFMH)Highlighted systemic challenges and the importance of accessible mental health support structures, while advocating for continued education and awareness.
Each speaker contributed to a well-rounded and impactful discussion, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in addressing men’s mental health holistically.
Leadership and Coordination
The success of the event was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Lesedi Mahlalela, Community Development Officer of the Law Students’ Council (2025/26), whose vision and coordination ensured a meaningful and well-executed initiative.
Her commitment to creating a sustainable Men’s Mental Health Advocacy and Support Group reflects a progressive and intentional approach to student wellbeing.
A Step Toward Sustainable Impact
The Men-tality Conference marks the beginning of what promises to be a long-term and impactful initiative. By prioritising sustainability, the LSC has laid the foundation for ongoing dialogue, support systems, and structured engagement for male students.
For UnsilencedMen, this collaboration represents more than an event — it is part of a broader mission to create spaces where men are empowered to speak openly, access support, and develop the tools needed to navigate life’s challenges.
Moving Forward
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Law Students’ Council, all speakers, and every individual who attended and contributed to the success of the Men-tality Conference.
Together, we are reshaping the narrative around men’s mental health — one conversation at a time.
Speak. Heal. Rise.
