Surviving in Silence: Male Rape in South Africa’s Prisons

The 2021 Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services report revealed something chilling: almost 50% of inmates surveyed stated that sexual abuse in prisons happens "sometimes", "often" or "very often". Yet, discussions on male rape remain hushed, shamed, or entirely dismissed in public discourse.


Male rape victims are often reluctant to come forward. The fear of humiliation, judgment, or retaliation is overwhelming. For many, even naming the abuse feels impossible.
